Netflix is an integral part of American pop culture. Founded in 1997 in Scotts Valley, California, the media company has come a long way from its humble beginnings selling and renting DVDs by mail. More than two decades later, the media company has dropped DVDs from its business model entirely and has become a media streaming and production platform.
Not only does Netflix stream popular television shows and movies for its subscribers, it also creates and acquires its own original media content. In 2011, Netflix added its first original program to its media library, House of Cards. Since then, the media streaming platform has curated a variety of original shows and movies, many of which have attracted widespread acclaim and popularity. Some of the most popular Netflix Original television shows include: Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, and Narcos. Popular Netflix Original movies include: To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Bird Box, Fyre, and Oscar-nominated Roma.
In 2017, Netflix surpassed cable TV in popularity in the United States. Among streaming video platforms, Netflix has some competition, however. Streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Hulu, and HBO Now are also vying for the attention of American audiences. In 2018, Reelgood concluded that Netflix and Amazon Prime Video were tied for top spot when it came to which platform had the highest quality movies in their library.
While some people prefer one streaming service over another, the best choice for users depends on the type of content they want to view, how they want to view it, and price point.
